My job is not to tell you what to do, but to help you understand what you want to do and to assist you in achieving your goals through developing a safe and secure therapeutic relationship. The first 1-2 sessions will consist largely of assessment and information gathering, before we formulate treatment goals and plans and get to work.

Therapy for adolescents requires an initial focus on developing a safe and trusting relationship prior to addressing their issues and concerns. Therefore, in the first stage of therapy, I will focus on getting to know an adolescent client and helping them feel comfortable and safe with me. Then, I will help them face their struggles and problems.

When adolescents are in need of therapy, most of the time, parents need to change themselves because adolescents are still under their parents’ umbrella where they are hugely influenced by the parents from what the adolescents often hear from the parents to the house rules, etc… When I provide therapy for adolescents, I do provide parenting session every week to ensure that parents will change.


Family Therapy

If an adolescent agrees, I usually provide family therapy. With family therapy, I have a chance to observe how parents interact with an adolescent client. I point out to the parents (not with the client’s presence, but during collateral session) how what they do and say to the client has negative influence to their mental health wellbeing, and how they can have better communication.

I can provide therapy at clients’ home if needed (extra fee applies).

Online Therapy

Pros

  • As long as you can secure your privacy and can access the internet, you can see a therapist wherever you are.
  • Study shows that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy.

  • You do not even have to drive.
  • You can save time because you do not have to come to the office.
  • You can see a therapist where you feel relaxed and comfortable such as your favorite sofa at home!
  • Confidentiality is secured.

Cons

  • You might not feel as connected to a therapist as you might feel in-person.
  • You must have a basic idea of how to use PC and cell phones.
  • You need to be in California or any other country where the law permits such as Japan
    (if you receive psychotherapy from me, Tatsuya Arakawa, LMFT as I am licensed in California).

However

  • I am trained enough to help you feel connected with me even if you receive therapy online.
  • You can utilize the website below that is not difficult to use even for those who are not good at using technology.
